FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do you select what pieces you tattoo?
The selection process has morphed over the years; always in pursuit of the fairest way to approach this process that I can find. I review the ideas based on the art only. Names are removed from the applications when I read them, and I separate them into three piles of ‘definite yes,’ ‘maybe,’ and ‘no’s. I always have a set number of spaces to fill that I decide before I open, and I simply pull from the yes and then maybe piles until I have no spaces left.
Why didn’t my idea get selected?
Every artist has very specific strengths and weaknesses, and I think an important quality in a competent artist is being realistic about your own limitations. I try to evaluate the ideas through the lense of my own abilities, and often, I don’t select ideas because I don’t feel like I have the skillset to execute your idea at the level that I have come to expect of my work. Beyond that, there simply is never enough room for all of the amazing ideas you all submit. Ideas I love and genuinely want to do might not get selected simply due to space.
Am I able to reapply in the future if I’m not selected?
More often than not, please do! The response you receive from your application will explain how to proceed from there. If your idea isn’t selected but I would still like to do your tattoo in the future, you will be notified as such. There is no obligation or expectation that you have to wait for me, however I do like to let people know when their ideas don’t get selected simply because of space, not content. Lastly, there will be ideas that I don’t feel like I can execute at all, and I will explain that I am unfortunately not the artist to give you the piece you deserve.
Am I allowed to submit more than one idea?
I would prefer that people submit only one idea per books opening event in the interest of accommodating as many individuals as possible.
How can I increase the likelihood of being selected?
The answer to this one can be complicated and definitely varies depending on my creative focuses at the time of opening. Definitely review my previous work first and foremost. Not every part of my skillset is represented equally in my portfolio/social media etc., however I suggest making sure you see the style of your vision represented in my previous work before anything. Thoroughly review the information on the scheduling page. At the time of opening, I almost always will describe the style, size, and subject matter of the tattoos that I am prioritizing during that round of booking.
How often do you open your books?
I have done once a year and twice a year with varying pros and cons either way. This round I’m intending on taking a smaller group so I can hopefully re-open again in two to three months.
